Feel the Breeze: A Perfect Day on Jeju’s Coastal Roads with ‘Scooter Story’

Welcome to Kovolution!

When you think of Jeju Island, most people imagine renting a car and driving around.
But if you truly want to feel the salt in the air and see the emerald waves up close, there is no better way than hopping on a stylish scooter.

Today, I’m sharing my refreshing experience at Scooter Story (스쿠터이야기), located right in the heart of the beautiful Aewol coast.

1. A Warm Welcome from a ‘Cool’ Owner

Finding the right rental shop can be nerve-wracking, but the owner at Scooter Story made everything easy.

He has a very "cool" and laid-back vibe, yet he is incredibly kind and attentive. Even if you are a beginner, you don't need to worry. He takes the time to explain the operation of the scooter in detail, ensuring you feel confident before you head out. The bikes are well-maintained, and they have a fantastic collection of "pretty" scooters (like the classic Yamaha Vino) that look amazing in photos!

2. The Perfect Starting Point: Aewol to Hyeopjae

The biggest advantage of this shop is its location. It is situated right by the Aewol sea, meaning you can start your coastal run immediately after renting.

As soon as I started the engine, I followed the famous Aewol Coastal Road toward Hyeopjae Beach. The ride was surprisingly quick and smooth. Cruising along the winding roads with the sparkling ocean on one side and volcanic stone walls on the other is an experience you just can't get inside a car.

3. The 50cc Experience: Know Your Limits

For this trip, I rented a 50cc scooter.

  • The Pros: It’s incredibly fuel-efficient, easy to handle, and perfect for a slow, leisurely cruise along the flat coastal paths.

  • The Cons: You have to be mindful of the terrain. While it’s perfect for the sea-level roads, the 50cc engine starts to struggle as soon as you head inland toward the hilly areas. You can practically "feel" the scooter working hard to climb.

Kovolution Tip: If you are renting a 50cc bike, stick to the coastal roads. Not only is the scenery better, but it’s much kinder to the engine!

4. Understanding Jeju’s Coastal Roads

Jeju's coastal roads (Haean-ro) are world-class, but there are a few things to keep in mind for a safe trip:

  • The Wind: Jeju is famous for its wind. When riding a lightweight scooter, a sudden gust can be startling. Keep a firm grip and maintain a steady speed.

  • Speed Limits: Most coastal roads have a speed limit of 30km/h to 50km/h. This is perfect for scooters, as it allows you to enjoy the view safely.

  • The Viewpoints: One of the best parts of a scooter is the ability to stop anywhere. Unlike cars that need a parking lot, you can easily pull over (safely!) to snap a photo of a lighthouse or a hidden cafe.

Final Verdict

If you have just one day to explore the Aewol area, renting a scooter is a must. It turns a simple commute into an adventure. The freedom of the open road, the friendly service at Scooter Story, and the breathtaking views of the Jeju coastline make for an unforgettable day.
